description This paper deals with the scattering of electromagnetic waves in space, in particular that of radio waves used for broadcasting, TV and telecommunications. The basic features of electromagnetic wave propagation are described without any mathematical development. The principal antenna designs, radiation patterns, the effects of soil electrical conductivity and diffraction caused by obstacles such as buildings and mountains are discussed. To conclude, we address the impact of the antennas on the landscape and the expected trends in antenna technology in the wake of digital modulation. The problem of electromagnetic compatibility is mentioned as it represents a new challenge for many types of equipment powered by electricity.
