Description
Summary:This article aims to authentically share the lived experience of a doctoral journey, which is by nature unique, and to resonate with both the reader and the academic community. To achieve this, I present the value of autoethnography, both as a self-narrative and as a research method, to study the lived experience of the doctoral journey through the lens of the concepts of “ordeal”(challenge) and “professional identity”. I then offer the reader autoethnographic vignettes of 'typical' ordeals, illustrating the everyday struggles I faced as a doctoral student, these sources of tension fostering the emergence and construction of my researcher identity. Finally, I reflect on the contributions of this transformative experience, made possible by the phenomenon of doctoral training, and call for the preservation of liminal spaces to allow for the exercise of academic freedom in all its otherness.
