description [Objective] Exploring the transformation characteristics of rural settlements can enrich the research system of land use transformation and is of great significance for promoting the comprehensive revitalization of rural areas and the reconstruction of rural space. [Methods] Based on the differential manifestations of rural at the regional and village scales, This paper systematically analyzed the morphological characteristics, transformation process, and driving mechanisms of rural settlements from both the “point” and “plane” perspectives, furthermore, a comparative study was conducted on four typical villages in Fangsi Town, Yucheng City, the plain agricultural area in Shandong Province: urban-rural integrated, agglomeration-enhanced, characteristic development, and preservation-improvement types. [Results] (1) Four types of rural settlements exhibit distinct transformation characteristics. The Zhenbei community of the urban-rural integrated type and the Xingdian community of the agglomeration-enhanced type were formed by the merger of several ordinary villages, have undergone a highly transformed process characterized by intensive land use, regular shapes, concentrated distribution, balanced structure, and coordinated functions, reflecting the development trend of urban-rural integration and agglomeration improveme, reflecting the development trend of urban-rural integration and agglomeration enhancement. The Weizhuang Village of the characteristic development type relies on the exploitation of characteristic agricultural resources to promote the village site reconstruction, and the structure and function of rural settlements are optimized, showing moderate transformation characteristic. The Xinli Village of the preservation-improvement type retains the traditional development mode of ordinary villages, with weak changes in various morphologies, showing a low level of rural settlements transformation. (2) The driving mechanisms of four types of rural settlements transition are jointly promoted by common and distinctive factors. Under the combined influence of policy support, financial guarantee and the subject behavior, diversified transformation paths have been formed, characterized by social inclusiveness and government-enterprise linkage, resource integration and organization leadership, industrial integration and public participation, as well as government support and collective spontaneous organization. [Conclusion] The different transition types are the result of adapting of internal conditions and external environmental changes of different rural settlements. In order to promote the sustainable use and management of rural settlements, corresponding policies for transition and development should be formulated based on their morphological characteristics.
