Summary:In early 2018 the National Council of Canadian Muslims asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to designate the date of the Québec City mosque shooting, January 29, as a “Day of Remembrance and Action on Islamophobia.” The request reignited a controversy in Québec regarding the use of the word Islamophobia. The author’s analysis is that the arguments adduced by the word’s supporters and detractors belong to different orders of reasoning, with supporters considering the meaning of the word and detractors its usage.
