| Summary: | The city of Sharjah, part of the vast coastal urban area led by Dubai, is also the capital city of an emirate built up from various pieces, inherited from a glorious past, while it seems nowadays relegated in the shadow of its dynamic neighbor. As in all Gulf States, the study of the changes in urban societies and spaces can be facilitated by press reading. It reveals, through the local news, the framework of daily life of the city; local press is also a communication tool for the authorities who use it to dispatch their achievements as well as their ambitions. Sharjah appears thus as attempting to preserve an identity, distinct, even opposed to that of Dubai, through the primacy granted to education, culture and arts, the abiding by its Arab and Islamic roots, and the commitment to good governance. Testimony to it is borne by the care granted to the promotion of women as to the protection of environment and nature. |
