| Summary: | Beginning from its lexicographical description in the <i>Dictionary of the Croatian Kajkavian Literary Language</i>, this paper analyses the structure and usage of the synsemantic word <i>arti</i> – which is both a particle and conjunction as a morphological and syntactic unit – based on selected Kajkavian literary texts. The main goal of this analysis is: (1) define its morphological and syntactic purpose, (2) determine the period of its usage in the Croatian Kajkavian literary language, and (3) suggest additions to the lexicographical description of the entry in the Dictionary of the Croatian Kajkavian Literary Language in terms of its meaning and the examples provided. Analysis of the particle and conjunction <i>arti</i> shows that certain synsemantic words in the Croatian Kajkavian literary language underwent changes in usage from the 16th to the early 20th century. |
