Description
Summary:Abstract: this essay analyzes Les Danaïdes by Marguerite Lyberaki, an author who fits in both French and Greek dramaturgy since she wrote most of her plays in both languages, and a considerable number of them were played in France. The Danaïdes, relying on the myth and rites of Antiquity, focus on the relationship between the two sexes which results in the murder of men by women, as in the myth of the same name. The most characteristic element is the menadic situation of women, which links them to the religion and rites of Dionysus, and their connection with the sea. Hypermnestre’s attitude, consistent with the myth, enriches the play by giving another perspective to the relations between the sexes, since she does not kill her beloved husband, Lyncee. Her desire to have a child by him, in combination with the search for the true life of the Other can be analyzed in psychoanalytical, anthropological, feminist and in general, modern terms.
