Description
Summary:This paper deals with the key role artists play in regenerating urban spaces, and their potential to catalyze forces of change observable at various levels. It is perhaps the artist’s role to act as the director of a multi-dimensional space, not in the fashion of a set designer, but as a constructor of meaning, an interpreter of urban life in its most immediate and concrete aspects. The paper looks at two case studies of districts where regeneration has been driven by artists, in Tallinn (Estonia) and Helsinki (Finland). This analysis seeks to bring out the role artists play in developing a creative city.
