description Following the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869 Louise Colet, correspondent at the daily newspaper, Le Siècle, wrote Les Pays lumineux. Voyage en Orient. Distancing herself from the satire of European newspapers, this traveller records her observations on the canal and comments on the modernisation of Egypt. In doing so, Colet rejects the Orient-Isthme-de-Suez paradigm, coined by Flaubert, thus leading to a demystification of the univocal discourse on the canal. Colet supports the “authenticity” of Egypt and condemns its transformation by Europe.
