| description | The bibliography published by Ivor Noël Hume is a history of archaeology in the United Kingdom and North America. Born in London in 1928, the author began his career after the war by excavating post-medieval sites amidst the ruins of the capital destroyed by German bombing. In 1958 he left for the United States where, and as a result of his excavations at Williamsburg, Virginia, together with his numerous publications, he was to become one of the founding fathers of the archaeology of the 16th to 18th centuries, recognised officially in 1968 by the creation of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Historical archaeology, initially the study of archaeological remains later than 1492 in North America, developed during the 1970s and 1980s into a research method and then an approach to studying the modern world by combining varied documentation including artefacts, standing structures, works of art, written sources etc. Ideas developed by specialists of historical archaeology concerning their activity, notably the combined use of different documentary sources, are relevant to all archaeologists studying historical-period societies, particularly European medievalists. The principal results achieved by this highly significant scientific movement are presented in the second part of the article. |
