Description
Summary:In the historiography of political science in Russia, Fiodor Burlatsky’s article entitled “Politics and Science”, published on 10 January 1965, is regularly cited as a classic of the discipline, revealing the difficulties of institutionalising a science of politics in the USSR. The medium of the publication—the newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Pravda—was an intriguing choice. It raises the question of the non-academic contributions to the construction of the social sciences. This article focuses on the contributions of the Press to the history of social science, and shows that the newspaper, far from being a mere sounding board or distorting mirror of scholarly conflicts, is an important instrument in the struggle for the institutionalisation of political science in the USSR. We shall suggest some analytical approaches to the conditions of mediation of scientific issues in the USSR, to show the use made of newspapers by scholars with a view to constructing the discipline, and, lastly, exploring the relationship between the construction of a discipline and its uses in the public arena.
