Description
Summary:Introduction: Health-related quality of life (QOL) is an important yet neglected aspect of chronic kidney disease (CKD) care. Numerous advancements are nowadays being developed in the field of medicine to improve the clinical outcomes among CKD patients. Although these therapies help the patients to live longer lives, still their QOL remains uncertain. Objectives: (1) To assess the QOL of CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis using the Kidney Disease QOL-Short Form (KDQOL-SF) Questionnaire, Version 1.3. (2) To determine the association between sociodemographic factors and QOL among the study population. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the dialysis center attached to Government General Hospital, Srikakulam, from June 2020 to December 2021. A total of 152 CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis were recruited, adhering to inclusion and exclusion criteria. QOL was assessed using KDQOL-SF Questionnaire, Version 1.3. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS 26.0, and appropriate statistical tests were applied. Results: The overall mean QOL was 54.8 ± 2.09. The mean scores for domains such as physical health composite, mental health composite, kidney disease problem composite, and patient satisfaction composite were 40.05, 47.48, 67.84, and 63.85, respectively. Patients who belong to the older age group, illiterates, employees, low socioeconomic class, longer duration of CKD, and increased frequency of hospitalizations per year were found to be significantly associated with poor QOL among CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis. Conclusion: The study findings indicate a significant decline in the QOL among hemodialysis patients, highlighting the profound impact of the disease on both physical and mental well-being.
