Description
Summary:The work of Bruno Munari (1907-1998) holds a significant place in the Italian tradition of the artist’s book, characterized by recognized and impactful production. Munari, as a designer, artist, and writer, experimented with various techniques and genres, anticipating many future trends, especially in the field of children’s books. He also played a major role as an intellectual, particularly in his educational activities, through the dissemination of numerous books. This analysis focuses on Munari’s production of children’s books, where his artistic experiments place multisensoriality at the core of his work. Munari’s books designed for children go beyond a simple text support: they use format, color, cutouts, and a variety of visual, tactile, auditory, thermal, and material stimuli to communicate messages and provide a rich sensory experience. In particular, we will examine the Libri illeggibili and Prelibri, drawing inspiration from the essays Fantasia (1977) and Da cosa nasce cosa (1981), in which Munari explores how fantasy, invention, and creativity interact to offer practical rules aimed at stimulating and developing the creative abilities of both children and adults.
