description Born as a slave, Toussaint Louverture, after conquering his freedom, led the revolt of his people against the oppression of the chains and the colonial violence from the French Empire, reaffirming through struggle the inalienable right of humans to freedom. After joining the French Revolution, he freed Saint-Domingue from the Spanish and English presence and offered to his people a progressive Constitution. Betrayed by the Emperor Bonaparte who was not faithful to his word and refused to accept the course of History, Louverture was jailed in a dark prison of Jura where he ended his existence dedicated to the protection of the dignity of the humbles. Nonetheless, he bequeathed to the new continent the example of the emancipation acquired through struggles, making of Haiti the first independent nation of Latin America.
