description Relying on readings of materials from the estates of Janheinz Jahn and Erica de Bary kept at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, this article traces the ways the German translations of Léopold Sédar Senghor’s lyrical oeuvre came into being. While Erica de Bary failed to publish the Senghor poems she had translated as part of her project to elaborate a German version of the entire Anthology of 1948, her work was eclipsed by Jahn’s larger project of his Schwarzer Orpheus (1954) anthology. Curiously, de Bary herself paved the way to Senghor’s friendship with Jahn that allowed him to become the recognized German translator of the Senegalese poet. Senghor himself provided abundant information to help Jahn with his translations. However, the letter exchanged with his publishing house, Hanser, also reveals that as a translator, Jahn was not always the most accurate, but relied on substantial help by lecturers and by the translator Friedhelm Kemp. Furthermore, the article traces the editorial history of the German translations of Senghor’s poetry.
