Description
Summary:The gate tower at Château de Marmande (Vienne) benefited from two building archaeology missions commissioned by the Regional Archaeology Service in 2021 and 2022. These focused respectively on the summit and the southern elevation of the former entrance to the site. Thanks to the observations and discoveries made possible by the archaeological surveys and scaffolding, it was possible to reconstruct the original crown of the gate tower dating from 1166-1170d, as well as the various transformations carried out over the centuries: from the construction of a watchtower combined with the fitting of hoardings to the removal of the summit features when an adjoining structure was built, doubling the surface area of the gate tower, now covered by a four-sloped roof. At the same time, observations of the south face revealed a latrines’ system, and also enabled an initial chronology of changes to be established with the south dwelling, adjacent to the gate tower.
