Summary:The agricultural sector is at the heart of economic activity in most developing countries, playing a crucial role in their industrial growth and structural transformation. It has a multidimensional character in development, affecting various aspects such as economic recovery, job creation, contribution to value chains, poverty reduction, and food security assurance. In Haiti, agriculture employs about half of the active population but has been in continuous decline, representing only about 17% of the total added value of the GDP for the year 2023. The economic performance crisis of agricultural production units is characterized by negative agricultural incomes at the farm level. Such a crisis could pose a threat to investments and agricultural recovery. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the factors associated with the probability of negative incomes of farms facing this economic performance deficit. We used secondary data from one thousand four hundred thirty-four farms selected in five of the ten geographical departments of Haiti. A multivariate analysis was carried out using a multinomial logistic regression model to study the factors associated with the probability of having a negative income.The model results revealed six predictors of the probability of negative incomes at the farm level: the use of agricultural mechanization, the impact of climatic events (floods, cyclones), geographical location, livestock size, and access to credit. In terms of recommendations, we advocate for extending agricultural mechanization services, adopting crops resilient to climatic hazards, using financial innovations to improve access to agricultural financing, strengthening agricultural extension services by integrating sustainable techniques such as agroforestry and crop rotation, and promoting complementary economic activities such as beekeeping, crafts, and ecotourism to diversify income sources and increase the economic resilience of farms. In terms of perspectives, we suggest conducting studies on the importance of agricultural income in the overall income of farmers. Additionally, we propose considering other variables in the study of factors associated with agricultural income that our study could not take into account, such as price fluctuations (beginning of the agricultural season and harvest period), the size of agricultural losses, and the education level of the farm manager.
