Summary: | This article first presents a broad definition of partisan polarization in the United States today. It explains why its asymmetrical nature constitutes a challenge for democracy and what its most significant institutional consequences are. Second, the article examines racial polarization and its interaction with partisanship to conclude that they are so closely intertwined that analyzing one without the other provides only a partial view of political dynamics of the country. The manner in which this « conjoined polarization » will be dealt with is crucial to the evolution of U.S. politics in the decades to come. |
