Description
Summary:The scientific study of the wall paintings of the nave of the Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe abbey was carried out at the Laboratoire de Recherche des Monuments Historiques. It is part of a multidisciplinary research program conducted in collaboration with conservators and art historians. The observation and analysis of samples from the vault reveal that the paintings have been executed using a fresco technique in the first bays (bays 1-3) and using a secco technique on a limewash support in the following bays (bays 4-9). The pigments, which were also identified, have been mixed with grains of calcite from a metamorphic rock that is similar to marble. The presence of this filler is a marker of the original paint layer that allows to distinguish it from later repaints which are ultimately limited.
