description | Far from substantial definitions of Islamist moderation, and by locating this category within a specific socio-political and national configuration – that of the Islamist Tunisian exile of Ennahdha in France (1981-2011) – this article aims to show that the designation and identification of actors as moderate are contextual, evolving and can be re-appropriated or contested. The article demonstrates that the moderation label has allowed the Islamist organisation to survive in a migratory context, but also reveals its internal divisions. Claims of moderation serve some strategies of distinction, and produce effects of legitimation for a movement in quest for normalisation. This search for normalisation results in a delicate balance between compromise and rupture towards the Tunisian authoritarian regime and towards other oppositional forces, fuelling decisive disagreements within the movement. |
