Experimental Study on Characteristics of Frost Formation on Strong Hydrophilic Surfaces under Natural Convection Conditions

A hydrophilic polymer coating was prepared and used to release the frost formation in a series of experiments. The frost surface temperature and frost thickness were measured on the coated surface and uncoated copper surface, respectively, and the results were compared. The experimental results show...

description A hydrophilic polymer coating was prepared and used to release the frost formation in a series of experiments. The frost surface temperature and frost thickness were measured on the coated surface and uncoated copper surface, respectively, and the results were compared. The experimental results show that the onset of the frost formation on the coated surface can be retarded about 5-55mins, even over 3 hours in some certain conditions below the freezing point. Moreover, the frost thickness greatly reduces by 40%. Furthermore, the frost layer deposited on the coated surface is looser than that on the uncoated surfaces and thus can be removed by external force more easily. The effects of the polymer coating thickness on frost formation was studied and it is found that under ordinary conditions the effectiveness of frost suppression of the polymer coatings increases with the coating thickness due to the increased ability to absorb water.
