description In this paper, we focus on the relationship between two kinds of general nouns whose content seems to exhibit a sort of ‘under-specification’: ontological categories (human being, living being, material object, etc.) and general rôles (agent, patient, exeperiencer, etc.). First of all, we will analyse the analogies and differences of their functioning. Then, we will discuss the contribution of ontological categories to the definition of rôles. This will enable us to highlight the existence of an ontology of relations, besides an ontology of beings, and to provide some parameters in order to describe general rôles.
