Influence of anthropometric characteristics on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) prognosis in outpatients

| description | Aim – to evaluate the influence of anthropometric characteristics on probability of acute exacerbations (AE) and hospitalizations’ rate in patients with COPD.
Methods and results. 112 outpatients were divided into two groups: I –without any AE during last year (n = 51); ІІ – with one or more COPD AE in the last year (n = 61). The group II was also splited in sub-group II A (without hospitalization, n = 24) and sub-group ІІ В (with history of hospitalization due to COPD AE, n = 31). Age, sex, height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and data of pulmonary function tests were studied in all patients. There were no any differences between groups concerning the age, sex, height and weight (p>0.05 for all parameters). But significantly (р = 0,048) higher % of patients with BMI < 18,50 kg/m2 (16.22 ± 6.06 %) was found in sub-group II B in comparison with group I.
Conclusion. This data confirm significance of low BMI in prognosis of COPD AE’s probability, in particular those which lead to the hospitalization. |
