| Summary: | Manuscripts exchanged between Hélène Cixous and Jacques Derrida — whose literary and philosophical work is studded with dialogue between the two — bear the traces of their decades-long friendship. In the markings and manipulation of manuscripts such as Le Prénom de Dieu, Voiles, and “Circonfession” (texts shared between the two writers) marginalia, outsize punctuation, and reconstituted mock-ups can be read as attachments between manuscript, writer, and reader. We are encouraged to consider the surface of the manuscript object as a place of continuing encounters that reactivate writing in the archive and beyond — even more urgent when faced with new media such as word processing software and hard drives. Not only do these textual objects link Derrida and Cixous to the scene of writing, which the reader is invited to witness ; they also link Cixous and Derrida to each other, strengthening their friendship through writing — even posthumously. |
