| Summary: | This paper tries to show some features of the important relationship between Love (Eros) and poetry in Plato's Symposium, focusing, however, in Agathon's speech. So the paper starts underlining the poetic character of the contest in which the famous series of praises to Eros consists. Then the paper displays a reading of Agathon's speech, underlining three points: (1) how the thesis that Eros has a liquid form is connected to poetry; (2) how the use that Agathon makes of the words makes clear the corporeal dimension of these symbols, thus demonstrating that not only bodies are symbols, as Aristophanes claimed, but also symbols are bodies, something that is crucial to the relationship between Eros and poetry; (3) how the fact that Agathon plays with words shows that it is possible to have a relationship with words based on fruition and love instead of an instrumental on. |
