description While the Third Republic seeks to take permanent root, the congregations, too closely linked to the monarchists, and moreover in full reconquest of influence, appear as the undesirables of the end of the 19th century. Since 1879, the government was going to work to weaken this competing power through anti-congreganist legislation targeting strategic points. This policy gave rise to an outcry from the Catholic world and from jurists in particular. On March 29, 1880, the "Committee of Jurisconsult of Congregations" was founded. Under the chairmanship of Baron Armand de Mackau, he led for nearly twenty-five years the legal defence of congregations claiming neutral expertise because of their technical nature. An analysis of the Committee’s day-to-day activities leads us to wonder about the day-to-day implications of the task of providing legal advice, but also about the ordinary life of a group of committed lawyers.
