| description | This article focuses on the way quality of videocassette movies has been built at the turn of the 1980's, as evidenced by a body of French-speaking home video journals (Vidéo 7, Télé Ciné Vidéo, Vidéo News, etc.) and guides (Akaï, Brandt). By choosing an archaeologic viewpoint inspired by Foucault and concerned with the historical diversity of “statements” about video, we will identify in particular the strategies set up by several protagonists in order to combat the new medium’s bad reputation, due to illegal practices (film pirating), poor-quality image and subversive contents (horror, porn). The depiction of several points of tension, indicating variable positions of video relative to cinema, will allow to outline a definition of an emerging “videophile culture” and to enlight a new aspect of the history of cinema and video relations. |
