Summary:The transfer of public debate to private platforms, the transformation of citizens into users and their exposure to public issues without intermediaries have caught the institutions in charge of educating citizens unprepared. Although in Italy since 2019 a civic education law has made it compulsory to deal with the issues arising from digital citizenship, there is great disorientation among teachers in the management of this teaching assignment. An analysis of teaching practices and a comparison of teachers from several Italian schools highlighted the need for the activation of a training course dedicated to rhetoric, discourse analysis and the most frequent strategies of information manipulation, in order to promote an active and responsible digital citizenship among students.
