description Although the First World War has but a relatively marginal position in Japanese historical research, works have been accumulated on certain points (the matter of Greater Japan’s continental expansion, studies about “total war” within the army). In this historiography Japanese participation in the war has been generally analyzed in terms of territorial expansion and sphere of influence in the Asia-Pacific area. As to domestic affairs, the war and its consequences are considered in an international context of political, economic, and social changes known as “the Taishô democracy”. With the 100th anniversary approaching, new studies are developing with the aim to take part in truly international and interdisciplinary discussions.
