description Since the end of the Cold War, Europe has never been so peacefully consolidated. However, its vulnerability still exists in a context of increasing globalization, where societies are facing security threats and challenges that are growing in size and sophistication, as Ukraine highlights. To protect freedom, security, human rights, political stability, democracy and cultural identity, the EU developed effective tools within which research and innovation can play a fundamental role of support to understand, identify, prevent and discourage security threats. Horizon 2020 programme section “Secure societies: Protecting freedom and security of Europe and Its Citizens” designed to improve border security through conflict prevention and peace-building, will contribute to the implementation of Europe 2020 strategy. The aim of this paper is to define the advancement degree of the functional change on EU Eastern borders and to understand the value and the future geopolitical implications of the relations between Ukraine, Russia, EU, and USA
