description The narratives on the social construction of biodiversity loss as a public issue have so far focused on animal and plant biodiversity, while leaving in the shadows microorganisms’ biodiversity. Here I analyse how a loss of microbial biodiversity emerged in the mid-1970s as a professional problem in the dairy industry. I will draw on the theoretical framework of “regime of selection” which provides the conceptual tools to analyse how access and management of the diversity of agricultural resources change over time. Through a literature review I will first define two selection regimes, which I will name environmental and modernist. I will then show how the loss of microbial biodiversity that emerged in the mid-1970s in the dairy sector contributed to the emergence of a new selection regime, which I will name territorial. Finally, I will show that these different regimes coexist today in a very asymmetrical way.
