Summary:ABSTRACT Due to constant evolution of the libraries’ cultural environment, the process of library collection development demands extensive knowledge of specific library and information skills, understanding of library’s mission, and instant reactions to the changes in book market and to demands of library users at the same time. The author systematically introduces terminology and basic skills, which are needed for effective and efficient library collection development: basic knowledge of book and information market , library collection processing and management. The article represents basic information on financing, acquisition and library procedures: selection of library materials, checking up the relevance of bibliographic data, allocation of library funds, coordinated acquisition, selection of suppliers, ordering, claiming, inflow control, distribution of library materials and inventory control, withdrawal of library materials and monitoring the comprehensiveness and relevance of library collections.
