description The future Archbishop Serafim (Samoilovich) immediately after graduating from the Poltava Theological Seminary was appointed to the Aleut diocese as a teacher at the Unalaska missionary School. The missionary was warmly welcomed by Bishop Tikhon (Bellavin) of Aleut-Alaska, the future Patriarch, from whom he received his first advice and instructions. On September 25, 1905, Bishop Innokenty (Pustynsky) of Alaska tonsured the young missionary into monasticism. On October 2, 1906, Fr. Seraphim was ordained a hierodeacon and beatified in the Sitka Episcopal House. Soon he was ordained a hieromonk and appointed to the Nuchek parish with a residence in the village of Tatitlak. The young missionary zealously took up the task of educating the locals. He preached, denounced vices, baptized, and received communion. To view the villages of his parish, the pastor made difficult sea voyages, often involving the risk of his life. The epidemic that broke out in the spring of 1907 was a particularly difficult ordeal.
