| Summary: | In the Ile-de-France region, air pollution in the vicinity of road traffic is a crucial issue, particularly in the city center. Airparif, the association in charge of air quality monitoring in Ile-de-France, monitors regulated pollutants - on a daily basis and on the long run - thanks to a measurement network consisting of background and traffic stations. To fulfill their mission, Airparif also relies on a pollutant emission inventory, with specific treatment of road traffic emissions; air quality models and mapping systems that integrate road traffic.Among the pollutants highly emitted by road traffic, benzene and CO are no longer problematic in Ile-de-France. In contrast, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particles reach very intense levels and exceed the regulatory limit values in the vicinity of road traffic. Concerning NO2, exceedance also occurs in the background areas. Moreover, since several years, levels have been stable in the vicinity of road traffic. This stability leads repeatedly to over three million people potentially exposed to critical levels of air pollution. One future challenge for air quality monitoring is the detailed characterization of pollutant levels, including in the vicinity of road traffic. Developments are currently being achieved, regarding high-resolution modeling and mapping of model outputs together with observations. The aim is to improve the assessment of population exposure for environmental health studies conducted by health actors and to strengthen support to public authorities for the management of air quality. |
