description Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the maternity hospitals and maternal and child health centres in Jordan, the article focuses on pregnant and parturient women’s gestures, attitudes and perceptions. It intends to explore local configurations of female body geography revealed by the medical experience of reproduction. The author investigates how obstetrical acts interact with female body geography, determining the way birth attendants and pregnant women negotiate the contact with the intimate parts of the latter’s body, and analyses the manifestations and medical treatments of labour pain as expressions of local somatic culture. Finally, she takes into consideration the gendered nature of the interactions among women and health care providers, describing the power asymmetries inscribed in the therapeutic relationship.
