Like the Infant Jesus in the manger, Christians must surrender themselves into the hands of God and become « pur vide » (« empty vessel »). The Spirituality of Infancy requires submissive souls in surrendered bodies. Mystics like to experiment with this « self destruction » alone in their cells… But, by exploring even further the contradictions of this spiritual construction, certain mystics (such as Marguerite du Saint-Sacrement, Mme Guyon) turn into « empty vessels » and actually are the Infant Jesus. They give body to the Word, thereby replaying Incarnation. Such a strange devotion which, from the spiritual attitude of insignificance and humility, consecrates a physical mimesis between the devotee and the object of his (of her) veneration. A devotion which consumes the soul and the body… |
