description Taking medical social work in Shanghai as an example, this paper studied the role orientation of medical workers towards medical social work and its influence. Data were collected through interviews with 24 participants, including doctors with associate chief physician or higher titles, head nurses, directors of medical social work departments, and full-time medical social workers. The study found that healthcare workers' perceptions of the role of medical social workers significantly influence the areas, scope, and depth of social work interventions. Structural factors such as policy gaps and hospital cultural contexts contribute to role challenges. The autonomy, agency, and creativity of medical social workers play crucial roles in demonstrating their professionalism. The strategy of "gaining recognition through action" proves effective for medical social workers to assert their expertise in a multidisciplinary collaborative setting.
