| Summary: | Relations between the Papacy and China remain marked both by past conflicts and by the policy pursued by the Party-State in religious matters. Under Francis' pontificate, however, important advances have been made, the establishment of a contractual mechanism for the appointment of bishops being by far the most important of these. This contribution describes the concerns and motivations of the various players in their temporal breadth, in order to gain a better understanding of the issues currently at stake.
