description This article uses the concept of “temporal gap” by Hannah Arendt (1961) to analyze the uncertain period of the first big lockdown in spring 2020. Using qualitative methods, it offers a sociology of the plurality of temporal experiences in a lockdown context. The fieldwork, based on auto-driven timetables and semi-structured interviews with 57 individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds, allows to highlight 4 main results. First, this temporal gap can be considered as an event that reveals and amplifies a social polarization of temporal experiences, directly linked to unequal living conditions. Second, the temporal gap fosters more various deceleration experiences than it is conveyed by the discourses about the lockdown as a way to “slow down”. Third, it also provokes some paradoxical accelerations, depending on specific social and family parameters. At last, the temporal gap fosters some narratives that do not reveal a temporal confinement in the present. The interviewees try to give meaning to this particular period while articulating the past, the present and the future.
