| description | This article shows that there are three secondary cultures in the 19th century: classical literature, preparatory mathematics and utilitarian curriculum. These three cultures match, although imperfectly, with three more or less official curricula, with three different patterns of schooling and three sorts of elite. They hardly have an impact as the notion of elite is defined by a tax qualification. The culture of secondary education in France becomes a real social issue with the universal suffrage, the modernization of the society and the settlement of a relative “white-collar” job market. The year 1880 is a neat break because the 3rd Republic brings a political response to some societal shifts, which have taken place during the three last decades. It removes utilitarian curriculum from secondary education, and creates a binary educational system, fitting with a class society. Within the secondary education, there are both conflicts between classical and modern culture and some mixed logics, which produce intractable contradictions. These problems lead to the 1902’ reform, which will restructure secondary education for the 20th century. |
