Therapeutic potential of probiotic Lactobacillus spp. Fermented Talinum triangulare on Helicobacter pylori associated gastrointestinal infectious disorders

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is one of the most common etiologies of gastrointestinal disorders. Considering the inadequacies and adverse impacts of antibiotic therapies, a potential treatment for H. pylori infection is the need of the hour. Hence, in this novel study, two probiotic Lac...

description Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is one of the most common etiologies of gastrointestinal disorders. Considering the inadequacies and adverse impacts of antibiotic therapies, a potential treatment for H. pylori infection is the need of the hour. Hence, in this novel study, two probiotic Lactobacillus strains, Lactobacillus acidophilus (La) and Levilactobacillus brevis (Lb), were employed to ferment hot water extract of Talinum triangulare (TT) leaves to produce endogenous oligopolysaccharide prebiotics and several ginsenosides from TT fermentation broth (TTFB). Using 8%-TTFB, bacterial count, saponins yield (ginsenoside Re and chikusetsusaponin IVa) and DPPH radical scavenging potential of La and Lb were increased, while TNF-α and IL-1β were suppressed. Minimum inhibitory concentration values of H. pylori decreased to 4.2 mg/mL with increasing TTFB concentrations. Conclusively, probiotic Lactobacillus spp. fermented TT may prevent H. pylori associated gastrointestinal infections and related disorders through increasing bacterial count, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative activities.
