description This article examines the way French travelers of the 17th century witnessed the difficulties they regularly encountered in the Portuguese Indies, particularly in Goa. Through the study of six authors (Henri de Feynes, François Pyrard de Laval, Jean Mocquet, François de La Boullaye-Le Gouz, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, and Charles Dellon), it shows that the political and religious suspicion suffered by the French, which could result in their imprisonment, made them portray their stay in the capital of the Estado da Índia as a qualifying ordeal.
