Summary:The Jaldhak River is one of the most dynamic river systems in India, supporting the local lifestyles of thousands of riparian dwellers over a long period. This study demonstrates that over the past 65 years (1955–2020), it mainly aims to focus on riverbank migration and associated livelihood vulnerability assessment of the riparian dweller using the livelihood vulnerability approach. Due to river accretion, the total rate of land reclamation at segments A and B was 1680.82 km2/year, while the total rate of land loss owing to erosion was 1938.25 km2/year. In this study, 12 villages are identified as the most vulnerable based on 21 sub-components and 3 major components (Adaptive Strategies, sensitivity, and exposure). Despite high levels of sensitivity (0.697) and exposure (0.739), the results show a reduction in their adaptive capacity (0.599). This study also indicates that the availability of food, riverbank migration, and basic services are the main biophysical and socioeconomic factors that affect the livelihood of riparian dwellers. It is anticipated that the results of this study will assist policymakers and governmental organizations and aid in the development of an effective framework for action against riverbank migration and other comparable issues.
