description Today Emergentism is an influential school of thought in Language Acquisition Research (LAR). As LAR is closely related to research in language learning and teaching (the French acronym DDdL encompasses the epistemological and practical dimensions of such research), the influence of Emergentism is also felt in the developments of the construct of appropriation in the research and the methodological approaches in DDdL, as exemplified in H. Hilton’s article. Initially, I will consider, the epistemological bases of this school of thought in parallel with her paper and what, to my point of view, they imply in terms of conceptions of what languages are, of human relationships, of appropriation and of their consequences on what research should be about. I will then consider other choices that can steer reflection on the problems of language appropriation based on other epistemological positions. This will lead me to propose relational and diverse perspectives for research in DDdL. I will conclude on the broader philosophical positions that underpin the debate I would like to initiate.
