description This paper attempts to explore the question of heritage in contemporary photography of ruins and to identify possible convergences between this and the painting of ruins in the Age of Enlightenment. To do so, we will draw on markers of skepticism that can be observed in certain paintings by Hubert Robert and in photographs of ruins by two British artists, Daniel Barter and Daniel Marbaix. Do these images of ruins reflect a certain skepticism about the symbols of an imperial culture? And to what extent do certain representations of ruins testify to a profound and even prophetic awareness of the decline affecting all empires? Our hypothesis is that, despite technical, cultural and sometimes ideological differences, past and present representations of ruins are sometimes strangely similar in the way they approach and explore certain emblems of an imperial culture.
