| Summary: | Among some twenty notebooks currently available, the catechism preserved in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek is a particularly interesting example. Both its material form (a single big sheet made of sisal fibers) and the history of its deciphering deserve attention. Starting with Boturini, the first collector, then with León y Gama, and purchased afterwards by Humboldt, this pictographic manuscript was also studied by Eduard Seler. This article addresses the uses of this catechetical tool in a new way, by contextualizing the commentaries that its study brought forth. It also raises new issues by comparing it with Nahuatl catechisms published in the 16th century. |
