description | The Yellow River basin, a crucial ecological bulwark in China, has experienced severe damage to its water ecosystem due to economic and social advancements. Ecological compensation serves as a viable strategy to tackle alterations in the basin's ecological environment and to boost its high-quality development. This research quantifies ecological compensation standards for water resources in the Yellow River Basin through the lens of water footprint and employs geographic detectors to analyze the factors influencing spatial disparities in these standards. The result shows that from 2010 to 2021, the water footprint of the Yellow River Basin grew in fluctuation: the ecological compensation standard rose and declined. From the perspective of the subject and object, the subjects of water resource ecological compensation were located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River Basin. Shandong, Henan, Shanxi, and Ningxia were the main compensation subjects, and Sichuan and Qinghai were the objects. The roles of Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, and Gansu switched between subjects and objects. Regarding influencing factors, the explanatory power of the water resource pressure index is the strongest. The interaction between the water resource pressure index and other factors has a relatively big influence on the spatial variations in water resource ecological compensation in the Yellow River Basin. The analysis of water resource ecological compensation in the Yellow River Basin from the perspective of water footprint contributes to the effective establishment of ecological compensation mechanisms in the basin, the enhancement of ecological compensation efficacy, and the relief of tension between water supply and demand. |
