Description
Summary:Despite having no particular ambition to produce new knowledge, the Russian countess, Elisabeth B***, who published Souvenirs d’un voyage en Égypte in 1866, managed to provide much information on the way of life of women in an Egyptian hareem. The story positions itself within the paradigm of describing travel otherness and thus places the personality of the Countess in the background. It is also noteworthy given the writer’s discovery of African slavery and the contradictory feelings which ensue.
