| Summary: | The main goal of this article is to show and characterise elements of naturalist poetics in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series. Martin’s literary style is often referred to as ‘gritty realism’ because of the brutality inherent to the world it describes, which seems particularly hostile and unwelcoming towards the characters that inhabit it. But Martin’s novels seem also share a fair share of similarities with novels of the naturalist movement.
This paper presents an analysis of naturalist poetics in the stories and narrative structures of A Song of Ice and Fire. It also focuses on manifestations of naturalism in the depicted world. The analysis scrutinizes how Martin uses naturalist poetics to make the image of the medieval-like secondary world more plausible and realistic, and thus creates a background for the story. Finally, the article presents examples of naturalist aesthetics in Martin’s work, i.e. brutal depictions of death and violence or the accentuation of biological and physiological aspects of death, agony or suffering.
The conclusion is Martin’s literary style may seems novel, because author does not follow story and plot structures that are typical for fantasy. But he still refers to literary tradition by adapting (quite efficiently) elements of naturalist poetics into fantasy literature. |
