Description
Summary:This paper aims to discuss and analyse, in the light of unpublished manuscript documents and a comprehensive historiographical study, the teaching of Latin by Jesuits in Antequera de Oaxaca, a Mexican province that Ignatian educators controlled with their project from the dawn of viceregal evangelization until even after their expulsion, a time in which the influence of their grammatical methodology can be traced through documents and works that confirm this linguistic and ideological imprint. The work is divided into several parts: it outlines the role of Jesuit Latin grammar in New Spain from a historiographical perspective; it describes the operations of the Society of Jesus in Oaxaca, who stood out thanks to their grammatical teaching among specific actors of society, such as key seminarians for Mexican history; it analyses two unpublished manuscripts as samples of that educational tradition; and it proposes some conclusions to provide an overview of this unexplored episode of Jesuit Latin teaching in America.
